Main Purpose of Job:
The Product Developer is responsible for planning, developing, and delivering commercially successful product ranges across multiple brands for retail customers. The role requires strong judgement across range architecture (Good / Better / Best), pricing and margin, market positioning, packaging, and trend relevance.
Working closely with sourcing agents, suppliers, and internal stakeholders, the Product Developer ensures that products are delivered on time, to specification, within budget, and aligned to both customer needs and business strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Product Selection and Development
Source new products and identify suitable factories in collaboration with sourcing agents.
Negotiate pricing, balancing specification, quality, packaging, and market positioning.
Conduct regular market and competitor reviews to stay up to date with product, colour, trend, and functionality developments.
Develop and maintain clear category strategies and product roadmaps.
Plan and manage product launch timelines, ensuring critical paths are clearly defined and adhered to.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of product, trend, colour, and innovation lifecycles.
Work closely with Quality Assurance to submit pre‑tested products for assessment and support products through the critical path.
Create clear and effective range and price architecture models aligned to customer needs and overall business strategy.
Collaborate with Sales to ensure ranges are balanced across brands, customers, private label, and branded propositions.
Lead category reviews, discontinuing slow‑moving or obsolete products and introducing improved alternatives aligned to brand and market requirements.
Supplier and Stakeholder Management
Work with sourcing agents to optimise the factory base in line with quality, pricing, and product requirements.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with factories to deliver the best possible quality and functionality at the right price.
Collaborate with internal teams including Quality Assurance, Design, Sales, Merchandising, Warehouse, and the Far East office.
Liaise with brand agencies and licensors to ensure products meet brand guidelines while remaining commercially viable.
Use sales and performance data, supported by the Merchandising team, to inform range decisions.
Costing and Budget Management
Take full ownership of pricing, margin, and profitability, ensuring KPIs are consistently met.
Approve product re‑buys for general stock.
Analyse sales performance, identifying slow‑moving lines and recommending appropriate actions such as price adjustments, cost renegotiation, or discontinuation.
Showroom and Sample Management
Manage the product showroom, ensuring samples are organised, current, and well maintained.
Oversee sample management for internal use and customer requests.
Trade Show and Marketing Support
Organise and manage trade show participation.
Work with the Design team on trade publications, promotional materials, and product proposals for Eurosonic exhibition stands.
Administration and Compliance
Ensure Order Control System (OCS) checks and processes are completed accurately and on time.
Review and sign off all product artwork prior to production.
Coordinate travel to the Far East as required for sourcing and supplier meetings.
Work closely with Quality Assurance to ensure all audit, compliance, and product testing requirements are met.
Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills Required:
Strong passion for product development and commercial range building.
Proven negotiation and supplier management skills.
Excellent understanding of market trends and customer demand.
Highly organised with strong attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet strict deadlines.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess sales data and product performance.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for costing and analysis.
Confident communicator, able to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
Strong commercial awareness and budget management capability.
Flexible approach with willingness to travel internationally when required.
