Smart appliances

The smart kitchen market is growing at a faster rate than any other kitchen market. Analysts have forecasted an annual growth rate of 63.53% in the smart kitchen market between 2016 and 2020.

Our lives are becoming more and more automated. It’s strange to think that not so long ago, everyday necessities like contactless cards, touch screen phones and wireless headphones were more likely to be found in science fiction films than in your pockets.

Automation has affected every facet of our lives and the kitchen is no exception. According to Kitchens International, for those installing a new kitchen in 2018, wifi ready appliances, steam ovens and vacuum drawers are the norm.

Gone are the days of twisting the washing machine and dishwasher dials. Today’s technology allows you to control your kitchen from your phone or even your voice. According to Digital Trends, smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo and Google home are fast becoming  kitchen essentials.

Advancements in technology has also given rise to a range of health related products. Whether it be vacuum blenders, food printers or ultraviolet sanitisers, high tech kitchen gadgets are here to stay.

Easy Storage

Having a separate kitchen and dining room is fast becoming a luxury of the past. The 21st century kitchen is the focal point of family life.

As a result of this, there has been an increase in the popularity of kitchen appliances which seamlessly blend in with the surrounding area.

Research by trends firm, Stylus, demonstrates that this particular development is due to demand of the kitchen area to fulfil it’s expanded role. Kitchens are now used for laundry, entertaining and homework. Thus, there is now a demand for kitchen appliances to sit sympathetically alongside domestic interiors.

Furtheremore, data collected by the National Kitchen & Bath Association suggests that minimalistic styles are set to take centre stage among kitchen designs for the foreseeable future.

Once again, industry leaders believe that the kitchen often serves as a reflection of the homeowner. Bosch home appliance experts point out that the popularity of minimalistic kitchen styles can be attributed to the idea that “customers view the cleanliness and appearance of a kitchen as a reflection of their inner self”.

One product category to benefit from this trend is smart storage solutions. Examples include walled plate racks, sink organisers, food storage boxes and index chopping boards.

Bold Colours

Third on our list are bold and vibrant colours. Of all the trends, this particular category is featured in the most articles. Everyone seems to agree that colourful kitchen appliances are growing in popularity.

Don’t just take my word for it. Interior designers Matt Prall and Stephen Garland believe that the use of colour in the kitchen reflect the homeowners’ personality.

The importance of this trend is emphasised by Kitchen designers deVOL who note that colours can be used to evoke particular feelings. Whether it be dark tones for richness, ambience and formality or softer shades for a more calming atmosphere, there is no doubt that the use of colour in the kitchen is vital.

The popularity of colourful kitchen appliances is also touched upon by HGTV, HouseBeautiful and Insinkerator who all note that colourful appliances serve to light up kitchen spaces.

It comes as no surprise that brands like and SMEG continue to experience sustained growth due to the popularity of their vibrant colour schemes.
